Our dogs love to get their teeth on anything they can get their chompers on. While some non-food items like grass and leaves aren’t so bad, other chewable favorites–like socks and underwear–can cause long term issues. We’re breaking down why our pups love to snack on, really, anything outside of meal time, issues doggy pica–the medical term for someone or some dog who can’t stop chewing or picking–can cause, and how to keep them from gnawing on our new summer shoes.
Why they chomp
It’s in their nature! If your dog likes to snack on grass, leaves, and sticks outside it’s likely just because they’re getting in touch with their animal instincts and it’s not a huge problem, as long as the grass hasn’t recently been treated with chemicals or pesticides. The medical and behavioral issues behind their constant gnawing speak to more systemic problems you should pay attention to. If they’re destructive or chewing up the house while you’re away at work or running errands, it could be because they’re bored or looking for attention.
If they are really eating grass rather than just chewing on it, it could be a sign of an upset stomach. Grass contains a lot of fiber and irritates the stomach lining which could cause your dog to throw up or have diarrhea. This could also indicate that they need more fiber or iron in their diet to help with their upset tummies. More serious, but less common, issues that frequent or destructive chewing are parasites, thyroid problems, or cognitive dysfunction.
Possible Long Term Effects
While most non-food items aren’t especially hazardous, it’s best to keep snacks and meals to dog friendly items. If your dog is chewing up your house it’s important to keep things that they could easily swallow out of reach. The biggest problem that can arise are intestinal blockages or choking.
If they often go for other dog’s poop at the dog park or out on the train, try to keep them away because this is a way for them to get diseases and parasites. If you think your dog has eaten something they shouldn’t, please reach out to your vet ASAP!
How to Help
The best way for dogs to stop eating grass, socks, or coffee tables is to give them a balanced diet and plenty of exercise. Dogs are like us, they snack when they are unsatisfied, not properly nourished, or bored. PetPlate is a great way to make sure that your pup has a complete diet of whole foods to keep them healthy, full, and satisfied between mealtimes.
If your dog’s chewing persists, you should look at different behavioral training methods for your dog or crate train them for when you are away. If they are still going to town on everything in the house, reach out to your vet for further advice!
