It’s take your dog to work week, and if your workplace allows you to bring your dog, consider them hired! Before you start the onboarding process for your pup there are some things to consider surrounding your company, dog’s, and your own preparedness in the office.

Does your pup qualify for the position of CDO (Chief Dog Officer)?

Before bringing your dog to work, make sure they’re well-suited for the office environment. If your dog is easily stressed by new environments, people, or other animals, it might be best to leave them at home. However, if your dog is well-socialized, calm, and enjoys being around people, they could be the perfect office companion.

Remember, not all dogs are cut out for a busy or loud office setting. Dogs need to be properly trained for whatever work environment they’re going into and should be potty trained, quiet, and be, for lack of a better term, chill, as to not disrupt the flow in your office. If your dog is prone to accidents, bouts of barking, or is easily excitable, they may not be ready to enter the workforce yet.

Are you and your workplace ready to expand your team?

It’s essential to check with your employer and understand your office’s pet policy. Some workplaces are pet-friendly, while others may have restrictions. If pets are allowed, make sure to get any necessary approval and familiarize yourself with any rules, such as where dogs are allowed to roam and whether they need to be on a leash.

Not everyone is a dog lover, and some people may have allergies or be afraid of dogs. Make sure to respect your coworkers’ space and preferences. If someone isn’t comfortable with dogs, be considerate and keep your pet away from them.

Another thing to consider is if it is practical to bring your dog to work with you. Some public transit systems don’t allow pets onboard at all. If you take public transit to work the busy commute can be too stressful for your pup, and the cost might outweigh the benefits.

You’re hired!

If it works out that you can bring your dog to work, great! Not only does bringing your dog to work help you bond with your pet, but it can also reduce stress and improve overall morale in the office!

Pack food, water, poop bags, and a bed or blanket for your dog to rest on. It’s also a good idea to have some of their favorite toys on hand to keep them entertained and comforted during the day. A calming treat or chew toy can help soothe any nerves your dog might have while adjusting to the new environment.

Be sure to schedule a few breaks throughout the day to take your dog outside so they can stretch their legs and use the bathroom–and to serve as a good reminder for us to take plenty of breaks throughout the day as well!
