Whether your pup prefers beach lounging, trail exploring, or chasing sprinklers, understanding their summer personality can help you plan the paw-fect warm-weather adventures.
Which one is your pup picking?
The Lounger (the sun deck is their happy place)
This dog is all about slow mornings, shady naps, and soaking up the sun—from a distance. Think older pups, Basset Hounds, or just your average laid-back lovebug. Their perfect vibes are early morning walks or sunset strolls, catching some rays on cooling mats, and chomping on frozen treats–try frozen watermelon cubes. With pups who like a more laid back summer, be sure to look out for overheating on walks!
The Adventurer (born to explore)
These dogs are ready to hit the trail, hop in a kayak, or sniff every single tree at the park. Think Huskies, Shepherd mixes, or any dog with a sense of wanderlust. Dog-friendly hiking trails and campgrounds make the perfect summer outing. Make sure to pack plenty of food and water, more than you might think just in case you need it!
Snakes, ticks, and toxic plants live in nature, so make sure to keep your dog leashed and stay aware of your surroundings. If you have a smaller pup, you can get a hiking backpack for them to ride in–think baby bjorn for dogs–to keep their paws off the ground.
The Sporty Sprinter (zoomies is their middle name)
This athletic pup never skips leg day. Think Border Collies, Vizslas, or any pup who lives for fetch marathons. They love to accompany you on your morning jogs, off-leash play, and rigorous rounds of fetch. To keep them cool, put the sprinkler on in the backyard for them to run through, or end your runs near a safe body of water so you both can take a dip and cool off.
These pups can be more prone to overheating and exhaustion in the summer months, so make sure they are staying off the racetrack during peak temps and have plenty of water in the meantime.
Whether they’re chasing waves or chilling in the shade, the best summer plan is one that fits them. Keep things cool, fun, and safe—and don’t forget the belly rubs and healthy snacks.
