Potty training your dog can be one of the most rewarding — and frustrating — parts of pet parenthood. The key is patience, consistency, and understanding that every dog is different. If you feel like you’re at your wits end with your pup, don’t give up! We’re here to help you get your pup house trained in no time.
When to Start?
The best time to begin potty training is between 8–12 weeks of age. Puppies at this stage are starting to gain bladder control and can begin to learn good habits. That said, it’s never too late to train an older dog — it just may take a bit more time and consistency. A good rule of thumb for night time potty breaks is one hour for every month old they are, so two hours at two months, three hours at three months, etc.
How Long Does It Take?
Most dogs take 4–6 months to become reliably house trained, though some may take up to a year. Expect accidents along the way, especially in the early stages. Stick with a routine: take your dog out after meals, naps, and play sessions. While you’re house training your puppy try and take them out at least once every two hours to help build their confidence in the potty process.
Do Some Breeds Take Longer?
Yes. Smaller breeds like Chihuahuas or Yorkies often take longer due to their smaller bladders. In contrast, working breeds like Labradors or Border Collies tend to pick up training more quickly. However, personality plays just as big a role as breed. Dogs respond best to praise (and treats) so make sure you are using positive reinforcement as they learn.
Tips and Tricks for Success
- Crate Training: Dogs usually avoid going potty in their “house”, just not their pet parents’ house.
- Praise and Rewards: Always reward with treats or praise immediately after they go potty where they’re supposed to.
- Consistent Schedule: Feed and walk your dog at the same times daily so your dog can start to learn how to hold their bladder.
- Watch for Signs: Circling, sniffing, or whining may mean it’s time to go out.
With patience, positive reinforcement, and structure, potty training can become a bonding experience not just a chore. Keep the hope alive, we promise your house will be a peepee free zone in no time!
