HAPPY NATIONAL MUTT DAY!

WE LIKE BIG MUTTS

(AND LITTLE MUTTS, TOO!)

national mutt day

Mutts. They may not be purebreds, but they’re pure at heart.

July 31st is National Mutt Day, also known as National Mixed Breed Awareness Day, and this pawsome holiday is all about embracing, rescuing and celebrating mixed breed dogs.

This special day was created to be celebrated on two dates per year, to raise awareness of the plight of mixed breed dogs in shelters around the nation, as approximately 80% of dogs in shelters are mixed breeds. Most pure breeds that end up in shelters are generally rescued quickly by either the public wanting a “less expensive” purebred dog or by a pure breed rescue. The day’s mission is to educate the public about the sea of mixed breed dogs that desperately await new homes and to celebrate the amazing characteristics that the mix of breeds creates in each individual dog.

Mutts deserve just as much love and respect as their purebred counterparts, and by embracing the holiday and bringing awareness to the situation you might not only save a life, you might also find your new best friend.

DID YOU KNOW…

  • On average, mixed breed dogs have longer lifespans than purebred dogs
  • Mixed breed dogs generally have better overall health, too
  • Mixed breed dogs have a unique appearance
  • Mixed breed dogs are generally less expensive than purebred dogs

HOW TO CELEBRATE NATIONAL MUTT DAY

According to nationalmuttday.com, in addition to celebrating mixed-breed dogs in shelters around the country, National Mutt Day’s objective is to bring awareness to these dogs that are desperately awaiting forever homes. To do your part, consider celebrating in these five ways:

ADOPT DON’T SHOP

The absolute best way to celebrate National Mutt Day is to find a way to help many of the mixed breeds dogs living in the world today. You can give shelters that house them money or volunteer your time, or you can simply adopt one of these animals. If you are looking for a one-of-a-kind pet, you can’t go wrong with a Mutt. Mutts come in all shapes and sizes, and have a veritable rainbow of coat colors and patterns to choose from. No two Mutts are alike, so your mixed breed best friend’s unique features will likely turn some heads and earn plenty of compliments at the dog park.

DONATE TO A LOCAL SHELTER

Donate dog food to your local shelters. You can call the shelter before you donate and ask if they feed their pups a specific type of food.

VOLUNTEER

Volunteer to walk dogs. Local shelters could always use more help. Call around and see if any of the pups up for adoption need some exercise.

PAMPER YOUR POOCH

Make sure your little mixed-breed angel is freshly groomed.

THE ULTI-MUTT FEAST

Treat your four-legged pal to the furry best food aka Pet Plate! Every Pet Plate meal plan is complete and balanced, containing the ideal blend of nutrients to support your dog’s unique health and lifestyle needs. Giving your pup what they need keeps the love growing both ways.

A NEW LEASH ON LIFE

Take your canine companion out for an extra long walk, give them an extra treat, whatever you decide to do, spoil them & continue to love them unconditionally.

TAKE A SELF-PAWTRAIT

Take a selfie and share it with the world! Celebrate by posting a photo of your mishmashed cutie on Instagram and tagging it with #NationalMuttDay and #PetPlatePups.

Whether you have a mutt or not, it’s a great day to spread awareness of all the personality and love a mixed-breed dog can give. Happy National Mutt Day!
